What to Pack for a Winter Vacation
Packing for a cold-weather trip can be quite challenging. Just the thought of having to stuff big, bulky coats and heavy sweaters in my suitcase can make me a little crazy!
The struggle to stay warm while trying to travel light is real. Over the years and through my recent winter vacations, I have found the key to packing for a cold weather trip isn’t about bringing everything you own, it's about focusing on smart extra layers and mixing your winter travel outfits that work well together.
By mastering this approach, you can stay warm, cozy, and stylish without the stress of lugging around an overstuffed bag.
Whether you’re headed for the snowy Colorado mountains or the crisp city streets of New York, my go-to guide on what to pack for a winter vacation will help you create outfits that are both practical and fashionable, so you can enjoy your trip without worrying about your wardrobe.

“Winter” can look completely different across different destinations, so it’s important to plan accordingly, and your packing strategy needs to be flexible. Some destinations face bitterly cold, sub-zero temperatures and heavy snowfall, while others stay mild with just the occasional cool breeze or rainy afternoon.
It’s also worth considering the different activities you’ll be doing. If you plan to spend lots of time outdoors skiing, hiking, or exploring snowy landscapes, durable and weatherproof snow gear becomes a priority. For city breaks or cozy cabin getaways, stylish yet warm pieces that can easily transition from day to night might be more important.
I always find it's best to check the weather forecast in advance so you have a better idea of what winter clothes to pack for your destination.
Below, you’ll find my must-have winter clothing items and winter accessories, along with practical packing advice for your dream winter escape.

WARM COATS / DOWN JACKETS
A winter coat is essential for any winter weather vacation. Depending on the length of stay and weather conditions, I would recommend packing a minimum of two coats. I like to pack one down jacket and one warm coat. A good coat can make all the difference in keeping you warm and comfortable throughout your trip.
Packing tip! If you find that your coats and bulky sweaters don't fit, you can always put them in a compact bag. I personally like to use compression bags as they can compress your bulkier items and save you a lot of space in your suitcase.
Planning a ski trip? Again, compression bags are great at saving space when packing your ski jacket, snow pants, and ski goggles, so you can bring everything you need comfortably.
SWEATERS / KNITWEAR
Oversized warm knits and thin sweaters for layering are my go-to in the winter. They keep me warm no matter where I go. I usually pack neutral colors like beige or cream and then two patterns to work in with my coats.
This makes mixing and matching effortless. Neutrals allow me to create endless outfit combinations that feel polished, while patterns add that extra touch of my personality.
This versatility means I can pack less but still feel like I have plenty of stylish options for my trip. It’s a small packing strategy that makes a big difference when you want to stay warm and look put-together.
PANTS / DENIM
When it comes to packing bottoms, I like to keep things versatile by packing both pants and denim. My classic blue jeans are a winter essential - they pair with absolutely everything and are a great option for both outdoor activities and dressier evenings.
I’ll also bring along a pair of pants that can be easily mixed and matched with my sweaters and coats. Lately, I’ve been obsessed with white wide-leg jeans. They feel fresh and modern and look just as good with a bold, colourful knit as they do with a soft, neutral cream sweater.
LAYERED TOPS
Layered tops are super stylish and handy to wear under sweaters, light jackets, and coats. I love how firm-fitting they are, and they keep me super warm in the winter.
I normally bring a few as they are lightweight and don't take up much space in your bag. Again, you can mix and match them with your outfits. I like to pack two neutrals, like a black and a cream, and then either a stripe or a block color.
Extra warm layered tops like these are always a good idea. They create a solid base layer that traps heat, helping you brave even the coldest winter days with ease.
THERMAL BASE LAYERS
When temperatures drop below freezing, pants and sweaters alone often aren’t enough. That’s when thermals become your ultimate winter lifesaver!
If you don’t know what thermals are, they’re essential warm layers designed to provide extra warmth underneath your clothes during cold weather.
I wore thermals throughout my entire trip to Canada. They kept me incredibly warm and unbelievably comfortable. I’d layer them under jeans or pants, and beneath my sweaters and coats for maximum coziness.
Try out these thermals today and experience the difference for yourself.
WINTER BOOTS
Boots are my favorite part of winter, as you can really make any outfit pop with your shoes. Again, depending on your cold-weather vacation, I would normally pack two pairs of boots, one a little dressy but comfortable for roaming around town or dinner out, and one sturdy pair of waterproof boots that hold up well in the rain and snow.
The most important thing when buying new winter boots is to do your research and choose a good investment. You want boots with good insulation that will hold up in cold climates - trust me, there’s nothing worse than having cold feet for your entire trip (I’ve been there).
Pair them with a quality pair of merino wool socks, and you’ll be all set to stay warm and comfortable wherever you go.
WINTER ACCESSORIES
Now for the fun part. Packing your winter accessories! I always like to bring a few pairs of gloves that easily match all my outfits, along with scarves that add a pop of color and texture.
I usually pack two warm hats to keep things interesting and cozy. Accessories are a great way to elevate your winter look while staying snug, and mixing and matching them can completely transform an outfit.
Remember to toss in plenty of warm socks and a few pairs of underwear to keep you feeling fresh and cozy throughout your trip.
WINTER PACKING HACKS
Fanny Pack
I find fanny packs incredibly useful, especially when worn under coats. When you’re layering up with a heavy coat, carrying a shoulder bag can quickly become tiring and clunky.
Wearing a fanny pack keeps your hands free and distributes the weight more comfortably around your body or waist, plus it keeps your personal items close and secure without adding bulk.
Packing Cubes
If you're wondering how I make all my items fit into my suitcase? Packing cubes are a game-changer for keeping your suitcase organized. I use different-sized cubes to separate my clothes by type, like one for tops, one for bottoms, and another for underwear and accessories.
They compress your items neatly, save space, and make unpacking a breeze. Plus, they help prevent your clothes from getting wrinkled or tangled during travel. Start using packing cubes on your next trip and see how much easier packing (and unpacking) can be.
Lip Balm
There is nothing worse than having sore, cracked lips. A good hydrating lip balm is an absolute essential for winter trips, but here’s a hack: keep one in your carry-on, one in your day bag (or fanny pack!), and one in your hotel room or accommodation. This way, you’re never caught without it when the cold air starts to dry out your lips. Also, opt for a balm with SPF to protect your skin even on overcast days.
Insulated Pouches
Cold weather can drain battery life on your electronics pretty quickly. Keep your phone in insulated pouches close to your body to help it stay warm and last longer.
Swimsuit
Even if you’re heading somewhere cold, pack a swimsuit. Many winter destinations have heated pools or an outdoor hot tub that are perfect for relaxing after a day out in the cold.
