Blue Lagoon Iceland

If there’s one thing Iceland is well known for other than its beautiful Waterfalls, incredible Ice Glaciers and stunning Volcanoes, is its Blue Lagoon.

It’s safe to say that this place is certainly on everyone’s itinerary of places to visit when visiting Iceland and for good reason. This place looks beyond amazing, its milky blue waters are simply picturesque.

Whilst planning the last leg of our Europe trip our travel agent suggested that we plan a 4-day stopover in Iceland. I didn’t know too much about Iceland so I did some research a found the Blue Lagoon, needless to say, the pictures just blew me away and the decision was made, Iceland here we come!

See below my 5 Top Tips when visiting Iceland’s Blue Lagoon!

Interesting facts about the Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon Geothermal Spa is one of the most visited attractions in Iceland.

The pool formed in 1976 outside a Waste Water Geothermal  Power Plant by the result of its by-products. It wasn’t until 1981 people started to bathe in the unique pool and apply the silica mud to their faces.

The unique water features 3 lively ingredients: minerals, algae, and silica. The Lagoon averages around 37–75 °C (99–167 °F) year-round.

The Blue Lagoon is located in Grindavik only a few short miles from the town of Reykjavik.

1. Book your tickets in advance

Before you arrive make sure you have pre-booked your tickets. We arrived with no tickets thinking we could buy them at the Lagoon, we were wrong! Pre booking is essential.

The spa experiences a large number of visitors on a daily basis and is controlled with time slots so make sure to book in advance so you’re guaranteed a spot.

2. Bring some sunglasses

Depending on the weather it can get very sunny at the lagoon. So make sure you bring a pair of sunglasses as the water can become very reflective from the minerals and algae.

3. Give yourself plenty of time

The Lagoon is only a 45 min drive from the main airport and 20 min drive from the town of Reykjavik. So ideally it’s best to visit the lagoon when you first arrive or when you’re about to leave.

If you decide to visit on your way out like we did make sure you give yourself plenty of time to relax and enjoy. We had a flight booked at 4 so we made sure we were booked in early so we could enjoy a few good hours at the spa.

4. Enjoy a Mud Mask!

You will find that your ticket includes FREE Silica Mud Masks, which I thought was a bonus. The masks are conveniently located at the swim-up bars around the pool. So grab some mud and pamper yourself.

5. Prepare your hair

The minerals and silica can really do a number on your hair so make sure you take extra precaution before you enter the pool. I had my hair in a bun so it wouldn’t get wet.

However, if you would like to wet your hair I suggest you wet your hair in the showers beforehand and then coat it with conditioner to protect it from drying out.

We had the most amazing experience at the Lagoon and would highly recommend visiting on your trip to Iceland.
